Language Spanish is the official language in Cozumel. In the less populated areas you may hear Mayan spoken between locals. Since Cozumel is a tourist area most of the people in San Miguel will speak English.
Currency Cozumel utilizes the Peso. The average exchange rate for the US Dollar is between 8 and 11 pesos per 1 dollar. However, rates will change with the market. The US Dollar is widely accepted but converting your money to pesos helps you maintain consistency. Check www.xe.com for the most up-to-date exchange rates before you travel to Mexico.
Airport Cozumel International Airport (CZM)
Airlines Direct flights are available from Continental Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines and US Airways. Because Cozumel’s airport is small, many vacationers will land in nearby Cancun (a much larger airport) and take the ferry to Cozumel. Buses and vans are available at the airport that will take you to the ferry for around $7.50 per person. Once you are there a 45 minute ferry will take you to the port in downtown San Miguel for around $10.
Entry Requirements Currently all that is needed if you are traveling from the US is a photo ID and proof of citizenship. However, the regulations will be changing in the next 2 years and it is always a good idea to bring a passport to avoid delays. Travelers coming from outside the US to Mexico should always have a passport. Children traveling under the age of 18 will need a notarized form from their parent/guardian.
Safety Cozumel is only 12 miles from the mainland. The island itself is very safe with the most frequent crimes being petty theft. The population generally consists of upper to middle class people who are well educated. Whenever you are traveling somewhere unfamiliar it is a good idea to never walk alone at night and be vigilant.
Getting Around Although most residents live in San Miguel, Cozumel is a beautiful island to explore. If you rent a car remember that the island has only one gas station, so fill up before you explore! You can also rent bicycles or motorbikes in town that will allow you to get around the island.
Water Although Cozumel does chlorinate its water, it is not recommended for anyone to drink tap water. Bottled water is readily available and used by most establishments for ice and food preparation.
