Areas Cancun includes two main areas- the Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) and the Ciudad de Cancun (the city of Cancun). In the Hotel Zone you can find numerous restaurants, nightlife and resorts. The downtown and residential areas of Cancun are found inland. There are a few restaurants, night clubs and boutique hotels in this area as well.
Language The official language in Cancun and across Mexico is Spanish. Keep in mind that Cancun has been welcoming foreigners for many years and most people in the hospitality industry speak or understand English. Other languages that are most commonly heard in the area are Italian, German and French.
Currency Pesos are the official currency in Cancun. The typical exchange rate is approximately 8 pesos per 1 dollar. However, rates will change with the market. Getting to the Hotel Zone Cancun International Airport is approximately 5 miles away from downtown and 15 miles away from the Hotel Zone. Cancun is a relatively inexpensive place to fly to in Mexico. Once you land at the airport private mini-vans and deluxe cars can take you to your final destination. Many taxis often have to pay airport premiums and can be expensive, but if you walk away from the airport and flag down a taxi you can avoid the premiums.

Entry Requirements Currently all that is needed if you are traveling from the US is a photo ID and proof of citizenship. Over the next two years many regulations will change and it is a good idea to bring a passport to avoid delays. Travelers coming from outside the US to Mexico should always have a passport.
Safety Cancun is typically quite safe. However, please remember that when traveling to a foreign country you should exercise caution. Keep an eye on all of your personal belongings and keep your cash and valuables safe. When traveling in the evening be smart and responsible.
Getting Around It is not hard to get around in Cancun, as most places to visit are on one main stretch of road in the Hotel Zone. There are several rental car companies, several buses, ferries and bikes for rent. Depending on where your lodging is located it is possible to walk to most places.
Water Most hotels will have filtered drinking water; however bottled water is always recommended and readily available.
